The visiting German Christmas Markets to our cities has fast become one of our favourite past-times. I certainly know my Christmas isn’t complete without a trip into Birmingham for a bratwurst, including a good debate over the white or red sausage is the best…(for the record, it’s the red that’s the best in my opinion) and of course copious amounts of Gluhwein.
In Birmingham, from Mid-November, we play host to the Frankfurt Christmas Market which has been visiting the city for fourteen years now and it’s one of the largest outdoor Christmas markets in Britain. With over 5,000,000 visitors paying a visit in 2013, it gets pretty hectic! I was fortunate enough to be in Munich this year and got to visit the markets there, they were busy but not as manic as Birmingham. Still, if you’re not able to get to Germany over the festive period, the markets in Britain are the next best thing.
If you’re not a fan of a bratwust you can get pretzels, crepes, schnitzels and knoblauchbrot and if you need something to drink aside from gluhwein you can also get weissbeer, mulled cider and hot chocolate – with a shot or kirsch or amaretto if you are that way inclined! There is also an abundance of stalls selling delicious chocolates, cakes and other sweet treats to take home – they are pretty hard to resist.
It’s not all food and drink though, there are plenty of gift options – leather, rugs, lamps and of course lots of Christmas decorations and certainly no trip to the German market is complete with a ride on the beautiful carousel!
It’s not for everyone, I won’t pretend that everyone will love it because it IS busy and it can be overpriced but it tends to be a nice atmosphere and the gluhwein is worth fighting the crowds for!
