In a lot of ways, it’s a good thing that in recent years we’ve all become far more educated on how to keep our bodies healthy. However unfortunately, along with our new found knowledge comes the abundance of online fad diets, Kardashian diet pills and teas that help you lose weight. These are known to give us an unhealthy relationship with food and our bodies – not to mention that they’re overpriced and cost a bomb. It’s as simple as this: if you want to be healthy, eat a balanced diet. Do NOT buy into the lose weight industry, but do buy into health. If you’re struggling and want to get healthy without breaking the bank, here are some top tips on how to eat and be healthy, for less money.
Make a Shopping List, and Stick to It
If you wanted to sell your house for fast cash, what would you do? You’d do your research on what companies worked best for you, make a to do list, and follow it accordingly. Why should a new shopping routine be any different?
Okay, that’s a pretty far fetched example, but the point remains the same. Creating a shopping list can be the difference between spending a lot, and spending a little. But remember, that it only works if you stick to it.
A great way of doing this, is by initially planning your meals in the first place. The first step is to sit down with your family or whoever lives in the household, and plan your meals for the week. this way everybody gets a say in what you buy and ultimately what they’re going to eat, so there shouldn’t be any complaints.
Once you’ve done this, figure out what ingredients you need for each meal, and make a list – including any extras such as yoghurts and fruit snacks. Then simply go shopping, and stick to the list. It can be so easy to stock up on things, and fall into the clutches of the inevitable “two for one” deals when they’re staring you in the face, but stay strong and stick to your healthy eating list. You’ll be better for it in the long run.
Never Go Shopping When You’re Hungry
One of the number one rules about shopping on a budget which should always be followed, is never go shopping when you’re hungry. Not only are you likely to spend more, but you’re also far more likely to spend your money on less healthy snacks. Supermarkets are very sneaky in their layout, and they know how to play all the tricks. For example, have you ever noticed the abundance of crisps, sweets, chocolate, pop and other unhealthy treats placed just close enough to the till so that you notice them when you’re waiting in line? Well, that’s no accident, and if you’re really hungry and standing in that que, psychologists would even put money on you breaking your healthy eating and spending plan. The top and bottom of it is, make sure you eat something, even if it’s just a slow burning and energy giving snack like a banana prior to the shop.
Fresh and Frozen are the Way Forwards
When it comes to healthy ingredients and eating as freshly as possible, going for either fresh or frozen foods is the way forwards. If you’re hesitant about buying fresh produce because it goes off more quickly, then simply freeze it yourself when you get home. Simple.
If you’re usually one for buying cans or jars, remember that these contain a lot more sodium and sugar than if you were to eat either fresh or frozen produce. The healthiest way of living is by keeping things as fresh as you possibly can, and cooking from scratch. This way you know exactly what goes into your food, and you’re less likely to be putting unhealthy chemicals and e numbers into your body.
Live the Natural Way
Finally, try your best to make your diet as natural as possible. As previously mentioned, cans and jars of food are usually a lot less healthy because they contain higher levels of sodium and sugar than if you bought fresh.
Generally, processed food is a no go – except on occasion. The best thing to do is try and stick to “farm food”. This is the stuff that could either theoretically be raised on a farm, or grown from scratch. If you stick to this mantra, you’re likely to spend less and eat better.
