Why London is one of our favourite festive cities

It’s no secret we love London, and Christmas in the capital is perhaps one of our favourite times to visit. Thanks to its great transport links to smaller towns, we can take the train to Brighton for an easy connection to the capital and have a fab festive day out.

London at Christmas is the perfect place to visit whether you’re a solo explorer enjoying the bright lights of the city or are heading to the capital en-masse for a fun family day out there are plenty of things to get you in the festive mood.

Window shopping

London has some of the best Christmas window displays in the world and there’s nothing we love more than pressing our noses up against the opulent and over-the-top windows of some of the world’s best-known department stores.

Selfridges always causes a stir by being the first department store in the world to unveil their Christmas windows and Hamleys Christmas window is always iconic as is their Santa’s Grotto.

A trip to London wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Christmas window displays at Harrods and Liberty and exploring their Christmas departments.

Christmas Markets

London has its fair share of Christmas Markets each offering visitors a different selection of wares.

As a family we love heading to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park for a combination of Christmas market and fairground rides, especially when the sun sets, and the lights from the rides light up the sky.

Situated in the hear of London is Leicester Square’s Christmas market, amidst the mulled wine and bratwurst you’ll find the Spielgeltent- playing host to a plethora of performances from award-winning variety shows, jugglers, musicians as well as cabaret artists. It really is a feast for the festive eyes!

Festive Activities

In 1841 London became home to world’s first artificial ice rink, and this long tradition (and love) of ice rinks continues to this day.

In no other city can you ice skate outside so many historical attractions- the tricky part is choosing where to skate.

A trip to the theatre is pretty much a prerequisite at Christmas. Whether you choose to watch the beautiful Nutcracker or a riotous Panto- you can’t get more festive than a trip to a London theatre.

Christmas Lights

We like to end our festive day out in London by taking a stroll through the streets and admiring the twinkling Christmas lights that illuminate the city.

Our top spots are Regent Street and Oxford Street for over-the-top quintessential London lights, Carnaby Street for its quirky-cool underwater themed display, and of course Covent Garden for its all-out Christmas atmosphere.

Best boutiques

Alongside high street and designer favourites, London has a wealth of up-and-coming cool boutiques for those unique gifts. Perfect for those thoughtful Christmas presents to show for the ones you love.

After day out exploring the city by fairy-light, catching the train home to the quite country is just perfect!
